Shaw attracts a variety of people who strive to appreciate one another’s differences. That diversity is now on display as recent renovations have begun to breathe new life into the neighborhood. In 1840 a 19-year-old Henry Shaw, seeking his fortune and looking to make his mark, bought a piece of land and began building. The fruits of his labor became the Missouri Botanical Gardens, and eventually the residential development named for him. The Shaw neighborhood possesses some of the City's most beautiful and affordable housing stock, much of it constructed between 1880 and 1950.

Shaw is near Interstate 44 with direct access to Downtown St. Louis. Close to surrounding neighborhoods like Compton Heights and Tower Grove, it’s easy to explore other parts of the city without going too far. 

Shaw was designated a Historic district in 1985. Just walking around the neighborhood provides a history lesson. Landmarks include the Imo’s Building, birthplace of St. Louis style pizza, Shaw Place Theater, and the Beauvais Mansion.

The Shaw neighborhood has plenty for residents to enjoy. Started in the neighborhood, The Missouri Botanical gardens is loved by all St. Louisians. The Historic Shaw Art Fair brings together juried artists, entertainment, and local cuisine. And for the furry residents, Shaw Dog Park is a destination for all four-legged friends.

Shaw is part of the St. Louis City School District. The neighborhood offers diverse learning options, from magnet to Montessori schools, to investigative learning and collegiate prep programs.

Tower Grove Park | This 289-acre park is a National Historic Landmark and for good reason. With Victorian gazebos, free symphonic concerts, and Food Truck Fridays, there is more to enjoy than just its the biking and walking trails. Yearly festivals like The Festivals of Nations and Pridefest are also held here.
